RIDRU Symposium on Higher Education Reform in Ukraine December 8-9, 2016

Welcome to RIDRU’s 2016 Symposium on higher education reform in Ukraine.  The Research Initiative of the Democratic Reform of Ukraine, RIDRU, began in 2015 under a research grant from the Kule Institute of Advanced Studies (KIAS). RIDRU is a joint venture of 12 universities in 5 countries and explores reform initiatives in language and culture, rule of law and higher education.  Thanks to the generous support of the Faculty of Education’s Conference grant fund and the collaborative spirit of MacEwan University, we are delighted to feature three special invited guests: Dr. Anatoly Oleksiyenko from the University of Hong Kong; Dr Sergei Kvit, Director of the Center for Quality Assurance at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and former Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine (2014-2016); and Mrs. Tetiana Antoniuk, Assistant Director of the Center for Quality Assurance at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

On Day One of this Symposium we will set the stage for working group discussions in the afternoon by hearing three keynote addresses in the morning.  Video recordings of the talks by distinguished professors Drs. Serhiy Kvit (National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy), Anatoly Oleksiyenko (University of Hong Kong) and Jerrold Kachur (University of Alberta) are available on this website.

Holding elected positions in student government, Zarina Khalimon (National Kyiv-Mohyla Academy – NAUKMA), Cassian Soltykewych (Ukrainian Canadian University Students Union) SUSK), Stephanie Nedoshytko (MacEwan University) and Fahim Rahman (University of Alberta) will discuss the activities of their student unions.  This session also builds understanding of one of the 2015 reforms in Ukraine – the development of autonomy among student unions.

Dedicated to overcoming barriers of access to post-secondary education, Ms. Abigail Parrish-Craig (MacEwan University), Ms. Amorena Bartlett (Ambassador, MacEwan University), Dr. Ihor Kobel (Ukrainian Catholic University), and Dr. Tim Loreman (Vice-President Academic and Provost, Concordia University of Edmonton) will describe initiatives at their respective institutions.

With quality assurance being a topic of paramount concern to higher education institutions across the globe, we have invited Mrs. Tetiana Antoniuk (Deputy Director of the Center for Quality Assurance at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Dr. Peter Mahaffy (Co-Chair Campus Alberta Quality Council (CAQC), Professor, the King’s University) to offer presentations about factors and monitoring procedures currently being used in quality assurance in their jurisdictions.

Finally, having visited and given presentations in universities in Ukraine, Dr. Jeff Stepnisky (Chair, Department of Sociology, MacEwan University) and Dr. Olenka Bilash (Former Associate Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, University of Alberta) offer reflections and insights on leadership and transformations in Canadian post secondary institutions that may be of relevance to discussions of the emergence of the new twenty-first century HEI.

This website also contains video recordings and power point presentations of Day 2 presentations.
